What is Parenthood about?
Parenthood is a reimagining of the 1989 film of the same name, which starred Steve Martin, Keanu Reeves and Mary Steenburgen and was directed by Ron Howard. It premiered in 2010 and ran for six seasons.
Jason Katims, the man responsible for turning the Friday Night Lights film into a beloved series, was behind the idea to make Parenthood a TV show.
Parenthood follows the lives of the Braverman clan. Zeek and Camille are the head of the family and they have four children, Adam, Sarah, Julia and Crosby, who each have kids of their own. When Season 1 kicks off Adam and Julia are married to Kristina and Joel respectively.
The show starts with Sarah and her two children Amber and Drew moving in with Zeek and Camille. Meanwhile, Julia is balancing working and motherhood while her husband stays at home, Crosby discovers he has a son and Adam finds out his son Max has Asperger syndrome.
Who stars in the Parenthood cast?
Many actors in the Parenthood cast will be familiar to TV fans. Craig T. Nelson from long-running comedy series Coach plays Zeek while Die Hard actress Bonnie Bedelia plays Camille.
The Braverman children are played by Six Feet Under's Peter Krause as Adam, Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham as Sarah, Swim Fan's Erika Christensen as Julia and Without a Paddle actor-turned-Armchair Expert podcast host Dax Shephard as Crosby.
Adding to the star power is Patch Adams actress Monica Potter as Adam's wife Kristina and Honey's Joy Bryant as Crosby's ex-Jasmine.
As for the younger cast, the most recognisable actor is Mae Whitman, who has been acting since she was six and made her debut in the Meg Ryan movie When a Man Loves a Woman. She is now one of the leads in dramedy Good Girls.
You might also recognise Sarah Ramos, who plays Adam and Kristina's daughter Haddie. She was Patty Pryor in American Dreams and has guest-starred on popular series Law & Order, Scrubs and Ghost Whisperer.
But it's not just the core cast who are well known, Parenthood attracted high-calibre guest stars as well. Everybody Loves Raymond actor Ray Romano joined the cast in Season 4 as Sarah's love interest Hank, My Big Fat Greek Wedding's John Corbett played Sarah's ex-husband, and Amber and Drew's father Seth and Joan of Arcadia's Jason Ritter played Mark, Amber's teacher and Sarah's boyfriend.
Why should I watch Parenthood?
As a multi-generational show, Parenthood has something relatable to everyone. But it's not just the broad demographic it appeals to, the drama also looks at what it's like to be a single mum, juggling work and family, cope with illness and even changing careers later in life.
Parenthood has been praised for its portrayal of autism through the character Max. In 2011 and 2013 it was awarded a Television with a Conscience award, which recognises shows that "inspires, informs, motivates and even has the power to change lives". It has also won three PRISM awards including one for Max's Asperger's storyline and another for a substance abuse plot.
It has also been a hit with critics, who appreciated the show's warm nature, clever characters, strong writing and talented cast. Actress Monica Potter was awarded the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama series at the Critics Choice Awards in 2013, while Jason Ritter was nominated for a Guest Actor in a Drama series Emmy in 2012.
