The Dallas Cowboys face the Arizona Cardinals on Friday in their second preseason game, but the prospect of seeing Dak Prescott returning to the field for the first time in 10 months appears beyond remote.
The Cowboys quarterback will undergo an MRI scan on his right shoulder at the end of the week to re-evaluate a muscle strain, which was first diagnosed by an MRI scan on July 28.
"This is something we want to nip in the bud and not let linger," Prescott, who signed a four-year contract worth $160 million in the offseason, told reporters on Wednesday.
The Cowboys also sought to allay fears over his fitness.
"It's not a setback. And it's not a reason to worry. But QB Dak Prescott is planning on getting another MRI," the team said in a tweet.

During the first episode of HBO's Hard Knocks: The Dallas Cowboys which premiered on Tuesday, Prescott was visibly frustrated by his shoulder issue and complained he "sat enough last year."
The 28-year-old suffered a season-ending leg injury in Week 5 against the New York Giants in 2020, which required two ankle surgeries.
Up until his injury, Prescott was on track to obliterate several NFL passing records after throwing for 1,856 yards with nine touchdowns in five games. In those five weeks, Dallas put up at least 31 points on four occasions before managing just one touchdown in the first three games without its star quarterback.
Prescott missed the Cowboys' 16-3 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game last week, when Dallas turned to Cooper Rush, Ben DiNucci and Garett Gilbert under center.
A fully fit Prescott is paramount to Dallas' hopes of returning to the playoffs for the first time in three years, while Arizona looks to make the postseason for the first time since 2015.
The Cardinals have made major moves in the offseason, signing three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt after he was released from the Houston Texans and adding former Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner.
Along with Chase Edmonds, who is listed as RB1 in the depth chart ahead of the game against the Cowboys, the latter is expected to shoulder more of the burden of the Cardinals' running game.
"We expect both guys to share the load for the most part," Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury told ESPN earlier this week.
"Chase can be an everyday guy and so can James, and so we want to make sure when they do get their touches, we're getting them in situations they can be successful and be fresh and healthy."
Friday marks the Cardinals' first game of preseason. Except for Cowboys and Steelers, the 30 other franchises will only play three preseason games this summer, one fewer than in previous years.
That is because the NFL has cut down on its preseason schedule to add a 17th regular season game to each of the 32 teams' schedules.
